## What time do I need to check in?

**We recommend leaving for the airport with plenty of time to spare.** With the extra steps to check in at the airport, you may experience queues at check-in or security, or you might be delayed on the way. Remember that these are **closing times** and they include dropping your bags off if you have them.

### Exact check-in time

See your Air NZ app, check-in email or e-ticket for your flight's check-in time.

### Check-in closes 30 mins

For travel within New Zealand, check-in closes 30 minutes before scheduled departure.

### Check-in closes 60 mins

If you're connecting to an international flight and/or your child is travelling alone, check-in closes 60 minutes before departure.

**Identification** - If you're checking in at the airport, you need a [valid form of identification](/content/domestic-check-in#identification/index.html) to board your flight.

**Check in bags** - If you're [checking in bags](/content/checked-in-baggage/index.html), please print out your bag tags at the kiosks when you arrive at the airport. Then take your bags to the bag drop.

**Select your seat** - You can [choose your preferred seat](/content/seat-select/index.html) when you check in online or on your mobile.

**Boarding pass** - You can only board your flight with a boarding pass which is issued after you have successfully checked in.

## Check in online

You'll receive an email or app notification 24 hours before your flight's scheduled departure letting you know that you can [check in online](https://flightbookings.airnewzealand.com/vmanage/actions/retrieve/webcheck). Online check-in closes 30 minutes before your flight departs.

When you've completed check-in, we'll email you your boarding passes. When you enter the lounge or board your aircraft, we can scan them from your mobile. All New Zealand airports accept electronic boarding passes.

## Check in at the airport

When you arrive at the airport, you can check-in at the self-serve kiosks, or we can help you at the check-in desk.

At the kiosk you can choose your seat and print the boarding passes and bag tags. Attach the labels to your bags and take them to the bag drop.

**You can use self-serve kiosks if you're flying from:**

- Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Rotorua, Tauranga, Wellington
- Blenheim, Christchurch, Dunedin, Invercargill, Nelson, Queenstown

## Check-in

### When can I drop off my bag?

For flights within New Zealand, Bag Drop closes 30 minutes prior to departure.

If you're connecting to an international flight, or you need special assistance, or your child is travelling alone, check-in closes 60 minutes before departure.

We recommend dropping your bags off with plenty of time to get yourself through security and get to your gate.

[Fast Bag](/content/koru/tiers/index.html) is a service available exclusively to Koru Gold, Koru Platinum, Koru Black, Koru Family Nominees, Koru Platinum Nominees, Koru Black Nominees, and Koru Club members. Pick up your checked bag right beside the aircraft on Air New Zealand regional flights.

### I'm connecting to an international flight, will my bags be checked through to my destination?

It depends on how your travel was booked and whether or not you have transit points before your final destination. See more about [checking in bags for connecting flights](/content/checked-in-baggage#connecting/index.html).

### What identification documents do I need to check in at the airport?

We may ask to see your drivers licence or passport, but we'll also accept your Koru or Koru Club card, a major credit card with your name on it, birth certificate or a Community Services card. If you're travelling with someone else's children, you may need to provide [proof of identification](/content/special-assistance-flying-with-children-infants#special-situations/index.html).

### Why do I have to show identification at check-in for domestic flights?

Most airlines worldwide using the e-ticket (ticketless) travel system require a form of identification to be presented when customers check in. This is to ensure that the customer named in the booking is the same person who boards the aircraft.

## Prepare for travel
